Should you pick a local or a toll-free number?

Both work the same way inside Numberline: greetings, extensions, forwarding, and the shared inbox. The difference is the kind of prefix the number carries.

Local number

Toll-free number questions

Can I text from a Numberline toll-free number?
Yes, after toll-free verification. US carriers require every toll-free number to be verified before it sends texts: your business name and address, website, the kinds of messages you send, and how customers opt in. Once approved, the same toll-free number handles calls and texts, so you do not need a separate number for messaging.
Can I port my existing 800 number?
Numberline is designed to support bringing an eligible toll-free number, including 800 numbers. Keep your current service active until the port completes, and have your account details with your current provider ready. The timeline is set by your current carrier, so we do not promise a fixed number of days. See the porting guide for what to prepare.
Can I have both a local and a toll-free number?
Yes. Numberline lets you add more than one number, so you can run a local number and a toll-free number on the same account and route each where you want.
Does a toll-free number work for callers outside the US?
US toll-free numbers are free to call from the US, and usually from Canada as well. From other countries they may not connect or may carry international charges, so businesses with callers abroad often list a local number too.
