So you wanted to run a startup, be your own boss and enjoy the sweetness of life? Didn’t we all… but mind you, you ended up being an octopus solopreneur or calling all your friends to run a service with 10 other people. Any of these sound familiar?
New U.S. business applications remain elevated, solo founders account for a growing share of venture-backed startups, and AI is moving from a specialist technology into everyday business operations. Together, these shifts support the rise of businesses that can launch, sell and serve customers with smaller human teams.
A business application is not a confirmed business formation. A layoff does not automatically produce an entrepreneur. Using an AI chatbot is not the same as delegating work to an autonomous agent. This Numberline guide keeps those measures separate and identifies where the data show a clear change and where the lean, agent-powered startup remains an emerging model.

New business formation statistics
The United States continues to record substantial business-starting activity, but applications and operating companies are different measures. Census counts selected EIN applications, then measures or projects the subset that becomes employer businesses with payroll.
New business applications & formations
- Census projected 30,438 employer businesses would form within four quarters from December 2025 applications and 40,826 within eight quarters. The eight-quarter forecast captures formations occurring beyond the first year. U.S. Census Bureau, January 2026
- Business Employment Dynamics recorded 7.84 million gross job gains and 7.25 million gross job losses at private establishments in the fourth quarter of 2025. Gross gains were higher than gross losses. Bureau of Labor Statistics, September 2026
- The December 2025 four-quarter projection fell 3.3% from November, while the eight-quarter projection fell 3.8%. Both forecast horizons moved in the same direction. U.S. Census Bureau, January 2026
- Professional services generated 75,062 U.S. business applications in December 2025, while retail trade generated 100,951. Both sectors were major sources of applications that month. U.S. Census Bureau, January 2026
Growth in new businesses since 2023
- Census monthly data extend from July 2004 and are published for the nation, regions and states. Historical 2023, 2024 and 2025 releases remain available for like-for-like comparisons. U.S. Census Bureau, September 2026
- Census revised the 2023 and 2024 annual county totals when it added 2025 data in June 2026. The revision creates a cleaner base for recent trend comparisons. U.S. Census Bureau, June 2026
- Stripe reported that Delaware C-corporation formations increased 28% in 2025. The increase signals continued momentum in a major incorporation hub. Stripe, December 2025
Layoffs & new entrepreneurship
Recent labor-market data confirm substantial worker displacement, but they do not prove that AI layoffs are driving startup formation. The responsible comparison is to show the two trends separately and use transition evidence only when a study directly follows displaced workers into self-employment.
Layoffs & AI-related job disruption
- U.S. private establishments recorded 7.25 million gross job losses in the fourth quarter of 2025. The scale shows continued churn across the labor market. Bureau of Labor Statistics, September 2026
- About 6.27 million U.S. workers age 20 or older were displaced from jobs during 2021 to 2023. Many workers faced a potential career reset during the period. Bureau of Labor Statistics, August 2024
- Of those displaced workers, 68.7% were employed, 16.4% were unemployed and 14.9% were outside the labor force in January 2024. More than two-thirds had returned to employment by January 2024. Bureau of Labor Statistics, August 2024
From job loss to self-employment & business creation
- Among 1.41 million long-tenured displaced workers who had lost full-time wage jobs and were reemployed by January 2024, 119,000 were self-employed or unpaid family workers. Self-employment was one measurable destination after displacement. Bureau of Labor Statistics, August 2024
Startup team size statistics
Founding teams are getting smaller in Carta's startup population, while hiring is occurring later. These patterns fit the lean-startup thesis, although Carta covers only companies using its platform, a subset of all new U.S. businesses.

- Six in ten AI users who completed tasks faster reinvested the saved time into more or better work. Another 28% used some of the time to avoid overtime or extra hours. U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, June 2026
AI agents & the rise of lean startups
Startup activity is shifting from building AI assistants toward systems that can complete multi-step tasks. Agent data are newer and often platform-specific, so adoption estimates should retain their original populations.
AI agent adoption statistics
- 44% of Stripe Atlas startups building AI infrastructure, copilots or agents focused on agents in 2025, up from 27% in 2024. Agents gained ground quickly against infrastructure and copilots. Stripe, December 2025

Human employees working alongside AI agents
- Most small-business employees using AI described it as a productivity tool that supports their own work. Half used AI, and six in ten faster workers redirected time into additional or higher-quality output. U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, June 2026
Voice AI & automated customer service
Voice AI can extend phone coverage and handle structured interactions, but voice-specific adoption evidence remains thinner than general chatbot research. The best current studies also show why a clear path to a human remains important.
Voice AI customer service statistics
- 80% of 400 business leaders in Deepgram and Opus Research's 2025 survey said their organizations used traditional voice-agent systems, but only 21% were very satisfied. Deepgram, 2025

Customer experience, cost & resolution time
- 92% of more than 1,500 customer-service leaders surveyed by HubSpot said AI improved their response times. Faster replies give small teams more capacity during demand spikes. HubSpot, May 2025
- The 14% full-resolution rate for self-service shows that faster first response and complete resolution are separate outcomes. Speed matters, but customers also need complete resolution. Gartner, August 2024
The future of the smaller, AI-powered business
The strongest evidence supports several trends converging. No single causal chain is proven yet. New firms continue to form, solo founders are more common in Carta's population, AI adoption is rising, and agent startups are gaining share. None of those facts alone proves that AI will eliminate traditional startup teams.
- The share of solo-founded Carta startups reached about 36% in 2025, while 42% of Stripe Atlas founders described their startups as AI companies. Carta, March 2026 Stripe, December 2025
- The number of countries represented by Atlas incorporations hit 169 in 2025, an all-time high, up from 158 in 2024. This year also marked Atlas’s first-ever founders from the Central African Republic, Comoros, San Marino, and Vanuatu. Stripe, December 2025
Artificial intelligence versus Super Intelligence
Washington’s move to rename “Artificial Intelligence” as “Super Intelligence” raises a practical question for small ventures: could a change in government language change how they do business? For small ventures pursuing federal opportunities, that shift could influence how they describe their products and communicate with government buyers.
- More than $5 billion announced for the Genesis Mission. According to the White House, this federal initiative uses what the administration now calls “Super Intelligence” to accelerate breakthroughs in science, medicine, energy and manufacturing. White House, September 2026
- More than 90 federal actions identified in America’s AI Action Plan. The accompanying fact sheet references the July 2025 plan’s actions to accelerate innovation, build infrastructure and extend U.S. leadership, now describing these as part of its “SI” agenda. White House, September 2026
- Trump’s September 29, 2026 executive order does direct the U.S. executive branch to replace “AI” with “Super Intelligence.” It does not establish a worldwide name change. White House, September 2026
Methodology & source notes
Geography: Census and BLS statistics are U.S. measures. Carta describes companies on its platform, primarily in the U.S. venture ecosystem. Stripe Atlas includes U.S. and international founders, so every Atlas finding is labeled. Verizon's cited CX study is global.
Business applications versus formations: Census business applications are filtered EIN applications. A formation is a new employer business with payroll tax liability that originated from an application. Projected formations are cohort forecasts. They do not count firms opening in the stated month.
Layoffs: BLS displacement and gross job-loss measures do not identify AI as the cause. No statistic in this page claims that AI layoffs caused the increase in entrepreneurship.
Carta solo-founder shares: Carta's January 2025 report put solo founders at 35% of 2024 incorporations, and its March 2026 report puts the 2024 share at 31%. Each statistic on this page cites the report it comes from.
AI adoption: Census asks about AI used to produce goods and services among employer firms. Other surveys use broader definitions, including employees using AI tools or companies using generative AI anywhere in their operations.
AI agents and voice AI: An AI tool assists with a task. An agent is designed to perform actions or multi-step workflows with some autonomy. Voice AI refers specifically to spoken interactions and should not be inferred from chatbot adoption.

What is Numberline?
Numberline is a virtual phone system for small businesses. Founders and small teams get a local or toll-free business number with a greeting and extensions, and forward calls to their mobiles.
Texts and WhatsApp messages land in a shared inbox, and every voicemail is recorded, transcribed, summarized, and emailed. Teams can also get voicemail notifications in Slack and connect AI agents from their own provider to answer the calls they choose.
