Can you show your business number when calling from an iPhone?

Yes. A business phone service places the call using your business number, so the customer sees that number instead of your personal one. With Numberline, you open the app on the iPhone you already own, choose the customer, and place the call. The app makes the call over the internet, not through your carrier line, which is why it can show the business number. Your iPhone, your carrier, and your personal number all stay exactly as they are.

Hiding your caller ID is not the same thing. The iPhone setting that turns off Show My Caller ID only withholds your personal number, so the customer sees no number at all and has nothing to call back. It never replaces your personal number with a business number. For the wider picture of keeping business and personal communication apart, see how a second phone number for your business works.

Your iPhone

Numberline runs in an app on the phone you already carry. Nothing changes in your carrier settings.

Your personal number

Personal calls keep coming and going as usual. Customers only ever see the business number.

Your business number

A local or toll-free number, or one you bring. It is the caller ID on every call you place from the app.

Return a missed business call.

When a customer calls your business number and you miss it, the missed call, voicemail, or text is waiting in the Numberline app. Return it from there and the customer sees your business number.

Calls made from your personal cellular line show your personal number. To call using your Numberline business number, start the call in Numberline.

This is how freelancers and consultants keep a personal number private, and how real estate agents call buyers back between showings.

When the customer calls you back.

The customer calls the business number they saw. Numberline answers with your greeting, then forwards the call to your iPhone or to the people you choose, following the forwarding rules and business hours you set.

If nobody answers, the call goes to your Numberline business voicemail. Numberline provides separate business voicemail with your business greeting. Messages left there are recorded, transcribed, and emailed to you, and you can return the call from the app.

Will customers see my business number or business name?

Your business number is what Numberline sends as the caller ID, and it is what the customer’s phone shows. That part is consistent on every call you place from the app.

A business name next to the number is a separate thing. Whether a name appears, and which name, is decided by the receiving carrier and the customer’s device, not by the phone that placed the call. Numberline does not promise that a name will show. If the customer has saved your business number in their contacts, their phone shows the name they saved.

Calling from iPhone questions

Do I need another iPhone, SIM, or mobile carrier?
No. Numberline is a business phone service, not a cellular plan. You keep the iPhone, carrier, and personal number you already have. Business calls are placed by the Numberline app over the internet and show your business number; incoming business calls are forwarded to your iPhone.
Can I use my existing business number?
Numberline is designed to support bringing the business number your customers already call. Join early access and we will share the porting steps when your setup opens. Your current service stays active until the transfer completes. See how porting works.
Can I call directly from the iPhone's regular Phone app?
Calls made from your personal cellular line show your personal number. To call using your Numberline business number, start the call in Numberline. Hiding your caller ID in iPhone settings does not substitute a business number; the customer just sees no number at all.
Which number appears when I return a missed call?
It depends on where you return it from. Return the call from the Numberline app, from the missed call, voicemail, or text, and the customer sees your business number. Calls made from your personal cellular line show your personal number, so to call using your Numberline business number, start the call in Numberline.
What happens when the customer calls back?
The customer dials the business number they saw, and Numberline handles the call the way you set it up: your greeting plays, the call forwards to your iPhone or the people you choose, and your business-hours rules apply. If nobody answers, the call goes to your Numberline business voicemail, which is separate from your personal voicemail and plays your business greeting. Messages left there are recorded, transcribed, and emailed to you.
Are outbound calls included in every plan?
Yes. Every plan includes calling out from the business number through the Numberline app, with a monthly allowance of outbound minutes that differs by plan. Incoming calls never count against those minutes. See what each plan includes.
